When to Self-Medicate

When to self-medicate
Self-care, which includes self-medication, is an important feature of healthcare and a lot of people are keen to accept more personal responsibility for their health by obtaining as much sound information as possible from expert sources. This is due to a variety of reasons that may range from high medical costs, to the current economic situation and having access to a proliferation of health information on the Internet!
Whilst it is positive to take a more active interest in healthcare as an individual, it is important to note the critical role that pharmacists play in providing assistance, advice and information about medicines available for self-medication.
Medicines termed, over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, treat temporary or minor health problems without medical supervision. These conditions may include arthritic pain, fever, flu prevention and treatment, hay fever, headache, mild/moderate pain, minor cuts and bruises and mouth ulcers.
These problems can be treated with over-the-counter medicines that can be purchased without a doctor's prescription however all self-medication must be done with care! Those that choose to self-medicate for minor complaints must always follow the advice of a doctor or pharmacist and inform them if symptoms appear frequently or persist.
Before self-medicating, take note of these guidelines and tips for responsible self-medication.
  • Always read the instruction leaflet found inside the product packaging.
  • Check the expiry date.
  • Store medicines in a cool place protected from light and moisture.
  • Keep medicines out of reach of children.
  • Before purchasing a medicine, ask your pharmacist or other healthcare professional for advice.
  • Consult your doctor if the medicines are for the elderly, pregnant women or children.
  • Do not take the medicine for longer than the period indicated on the instruction leaflet.
